Tenure Track Position in Engineering Seismology

The Center for Earthquake Research and Information (CERI) and the Department of Civil Engineering (CE) at the University of Memphis invite nominations and applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 2012. We seek a colleague to complement existing expertise in seismology, earthquake hazards, earthquake engineering, and structural engineering at both CERI and CE. Desired areas of research interest for this position include, but are not limited to, source characterization, wave propagation, site response characterization, and loss estimation.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in engineering, or closely related field, at the time of employment and show a demonstrated record of research productivity or strong promise in research. The successful candidate is expected to build a strong, externally funded research program, mentor M.S. and Ph.D. graduate students, and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in her or his specialty. Graduate student researcher to study geotechnical site investigation through seismic wave propagation
Applications are encouraged for a graduate research assistantship in geotechnical engineering or applied geophysics at UNLV’s Applied Geophysics Center beginning fall of 2012. Degree program may be in civil engineering (geotechnical), geophysics, or interdisciplinary engineering - geophysics. Candidates holding a B.S. in civil engineering, geophysics or a related field who are enthusiastic to study applied geophysics in a multidisciplinary environment encompassing specializations in geotechnical engineering, seismology and geology should apply. Geophysics Research Scientist, Oak Ridge, Tennessee USA
Battelle Memorial Institute’s Environmental Solutions and Process Operations (ESPO) specializes in environmental technologies, process engineering, and process improvement for government and industrial applications. Our geophysics group specializes in airborne magnetic and electromagnetic surveys for near-surface targets such as unexploded ordnance (UXO) and infrastructure (pipelines). ESPO is seeking one or more geophysics research scientist(s) for full time work. Compensation will be based on qualifications and experience. A full benefits package will be provided. The successful applicant will support our Geophysics Group in the Environmental Solutions Product Line at our Oak Ridge, TN facility. The position responsibilities include:
- Acquisition, processing, and analysis of ground- and airborne-based magnetic and electromagnetic data.
- Acquisition and processing of related position and navigation data
- Report writing and data archiving.
- General support of new and on-going geophysical research in sensor and algorithm development.
- Support field work in both domestic and foreign locations.
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS in geophysics or related discipline.
- 1-5 years of relevant experience.
- Training or experience in magnetic and electromagnetic exploration methods.
- Willing to travel up to 50% and support field work in both domestic and foreign locations.
- Demonstrated competence in Microsoft Office computer software and in geophysical/technical software such as Geosoft Oasis montaj, Matlab, or related utilities.
- 1-5 years experience in laboratory and field measurements of geophysical properties associated with surveys for both engineering and environmental applications.
- Ability to successfully pass medical screen, including the ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
- Ability to pass Commercial Motor Vehicle training and medical exam.
- Ability to pass HAZWOPER safety training.
Preferred Qualifications:
MS in geophysics or related discipline with 2+ years of relevant experience.
Experience with other geophysical techniques (e.g. seismic, resistivity, radar)
Competence in signal processing, computer programming, and geophysical modeling.

Support Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP) Projects across the United States

The ideal candidate will have previous experience performing geophysical investigations in support of the MMRP and other environmental programs such as CERCLA and RCRA.
This position will be responsible for working with established project teams involving multi-faceted and integrated UXO related disciplines. The candidate will assist the Senior Geophysicist in the development of geophysical approaches for MMRP projects; collection, processing, and interpretation of geophysical data; oversight of geophysical subcontractors and QC of data collected by subcontractors; development and implementation of work plans; and writing project reports. Must have experience completing work within project budgets and schedules; effectively communicating with internal team members, external clients, and regulatory agencies; and must be self-motivated and capable of executing projects with limited guidance. Excellent communication skills are a must.
The ideal candidate would possess the following qualifications:
- Three to five years of consulting experience;
- Experienced with EM61-MK2 and magnetometer data collection and/or data processing;
- Experience working on Military Munitions Response Program (MMRP), including a familiarity with requirements contained in USACE guidance documents and Data Item Descriptions;
- Has a MS degree in geophysics or closely related field;
- Experienced using various GPS units (e.g., RTK DGPS and Trimble GeoXT/GeoXH) to collect geospatial data;
- Expert (or at least experienced) with any to all of these programs: DAT61, Geosoft Oasis montaj, Visual Sample Plan (VSP), ArcGIS, Trimble Pathfinder Office, and the MS Office Suite (including MS Access and MS Project);
- Familiarity with some to all of the following geophysical methods, including gravity, Induced Polarization/Resistivity, time domain electromagnetic, frequency domain electromagnetic, seismic, ground penetrating radar, gravity and borehole geophysics;
- Current OSHA HazWOPER Certification and medical clearance;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to prepare investigation work plans and reports; and
- Geologic and hydrogeologic interpretation experience is a plus
